Russell Brand Movies: His Best-Known Comedy, Musical and Animated Films

Russell Brand’s Hollywood film career has returned to public attention following his conviction for rape and three sexual assaults in a London court. The British comedian and actor, known for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and Despicable Me, faces sentencing after the jury’s verdict. The case has renewed scrutiny of his years in entertainment, when he became a recognizable figure in Hollywood comedies and animated family films.

Brand became a familiar face in Hollywood after playing eccentric rock musician Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He subsequently appeared in several major studio productions, including Get Him to the Greek, Arthur, Rock of Ages and the Despicable Me franchise. His filmography spans adult comedies, family entertainment, musical productions and mystery dramas.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek

Russell Brand’s Hollywood breakthrough came with the 2008 romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, directed by Nicholas Stoller. He played Aldous Snow, a flamboyant British rock star whose relationship with Sarah Marshall, portrayed by Kristen Bell, complicates the life of her former boyfriend, played by Jason Segel.

Brand’s performance became one of the film’s most memorable elements, establishing his unpredictable comedic personality with American audiences.

He returned as Aldous Snow in the 2010 spin-off Get Him to the Greek, starring alongside Jonah Hill. The film follows a record company employee tasked with escorting the troublesome musician from London to Los Angeles for a major concert.

The two films remain among Brand’s most recognizable live-action performances.

Despicable Me, Minions and Other Animated Movies

Brand reached a different audience through his voice acting in the animated comedy Despicable Me in 2010. He voiced Dr. Nefario, the elderly inventor who creates unusual gadgets for supervillain Gru, played by Steve Carell.

He reprised the character in Despicable Me 2 in 2013 and Minions: The Rise of Gru in 2022. His exaggerated vocal performance helped make Dr. Nefario a recognizable supporting character in the franchise.

Brand also voiced E.B., the rebellious Easter Bunny, in the 2011 family comedy Hop. The film combined live-action performances with computer-generated animation.

In 2016, he joined the voice cast of DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls, portraying Creek, a character whose role becomes important to the story’s central conflict.

Arthur, Bedtime Stories and Rock of Ages

In 2011, Brand starred in Arthur, a remake of the 1981 comedy originally featuring Dudley Moore. He portrayed Arthur Bach, a wealthy and irresponsible heir struggling with family expectations and romantic relationships.

Although the remake received mixed reviews, it represented one of Brand’s most prominent leading roles in Hollywood.

He also appeared alongside Adam Sandler in Disney’s Bedtime Stories in 2008, playing Mickey, the best friend of Sandler’s character. The family fantasy follows bedtime stories that unexpectedly begin influencing real-world events.

Brand later joined the ensemble cast of the 2012 musical comedy Rock of Ages, playing Lonny Barnett opposite Alec Baldwin’s Dennis Dupree. The film featured popular rock songs from the 1980s and included performances by Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta.

St. Trinian’s and Death on the Nile

Before becoming widely known in Hollywood, Brand appeared in the 2007 British comedy St. Trinian’s, portraying Flash Harry. The film, featuring Rupert Everett and Colin Firth, helped introduce him to a broader cinema audience.

He later reprised the role in St. Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold in 2009.

One of his more recent major film appearances came in Kenneth Branagh’s 2022 mystery drama Death on the Nile, adapted from Agatha Christie’s novel. Brand portrayed Dr. Linus Windlesham, a physician and former romantic interest of Linnet Ridgeway, played by Gal Gadot.

The performance marked a departure from the exaggerated comedic characters that defined much of his earlier film career.

Russell Brand’s Film Career and Hollywood Legacy

Russell Brand’s movies reflect a period when his energetic comedy style made him a frequent presence in mainstream Hollywood productions. His work ranged from leading adult comedies to supporting roles in family franchises and ensemble films.

While his professional activities have shifted considerably since his busiest years in Hollywood, his performances as Aldous Snow and Dr. Nefario remain particularly recognizable.

For audiences revisiting his filmography, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, Despicable Me and Rock of Ages offer a representative look at the different genres that shaped his screen career.
