Jay Allery: Born 1956 Cooroy Qld Australia
Some Noosa locals would remember me by my birth name Gary Allery. Jay was a name I acquired when I moved to the Gold Coast many years ago. The name stuck and I actually preferred it, so it is the name I paint under, my alias or pseudonym if you like. Hereafter I refer to myself as the artist Jay.
Jay has always had a relationship with the Australian environment, both in the oceans and seas that embrace the coastal regions and the bush. Its strangeness, vastness and the oddities, characterised by its unique flora and fauna. With a background in hand painted restoration and graphic design, these skills have led to a natural inclination and desire to paint. Self taught, Jay’s rich imagination is often expressed through his versatile use of line and colour.
The consistent use of outline in Jay’s paintings come from his fascination.with the concept that all objects, even those viewed as inanimate, are actually living and as such retain an energy. In regards to this, through the outlines inclusion, Jay contains the energy of the subject matter within his paintings. Jays expansive, yet defined colour palette is a direct response to the frequencies of the environments, landscapes and creatures seen and unseen that populate his works. Jay further sees the finished artwork as a living entity and an active extension of the subconscious.
Jays mission is to produce bright energetic paintings that create a positive ambience wherever they are placed. Each piece is created with a background story, they are narratives that relay movement, energy, human drama and triumphs of the human spirit. The subject of surfing has a great influence on his work, a human pitting him/herself against the powerful forces of nature, in Jay’s opinion the greatest sport in the world.
