British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a high-profile trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court. The verdict, delivered Thursday, marks a major development in the criminal case against the former Hollywood star, who was accused of sexually assaulting four women more than two decades ago. Brand denied all charges but was taken into custody after the jury returned its verdict.
The 51-year-old comedian now faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence, with Judge Joel Bennathan warning that he could receive a “significant” custodial term when sentencing takes place Monday. Brand was also acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Russell Brand Guilty Verdict: What Happened in Court?
A jury consisting of eight men and four women reached its verdict after deliberating for more than eight hours across two days at Southwark Crown Court.
Brand was convicted of four sexual offences involving four women. The allegations concerned incidents dating back more than 20 years, during a period when he was developing his career in British television and entertainment.
During the trial, prosecutors portrayed Brand as a manipulative sexual predator who used his growing celebrity status to exploit women.
Brand rejected the allegations throughout the proceedings. While testifying, he acknowledged that he had previously lived a promiscuous lifestyle and struggled with an obsession with sex, but insisted he had never forced anyone into sexual activity.
Despite his denials, the jury found the prosecution had proved four of the seven charges beyond reasonable doubt.
Judge Warns Russell Brand Faces Significant Prison Time
Following the guilty verdict, Judge Joel Bennathan indicated that Brand should expect a substantial prison sentence.
The judge ordered Brand into custody ahead of sentencing, ending the bail arrangement that had allowed him to remain free during the trial.
Sentencing is scheduled for Monday, November 9, when the court is expected to determine the appropriate punishment for the four offences.
The final sentence will depend on the seriousness of the offences, the applicable sentencing guidelines and any mitigating or aggravating factors considered by the judge.
Police Praise Women Who Reported Russell Brand
London’s Metropolitan Police welcomed the verdict and acknowledged the women who came forward with allegations against the comedian.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy praised their courage and determination, emphasizing the difficulties faced by people reporting sexual offences involving influential public figures.
Police said Brand had exploited his fame and professional status to commit sexual offences against women.
The case also highlighted the challenges involved in investigating historical allegations, particularly when incidents are reported many years after they allegedly occurred.
During the trial, Brand’s defence lawyers questioned the reliability of the accusations because the women had contacted police years after the alleged incidents and following a 2023 documentary featuring anonymous allegations against him.
The jury nevertheless convicted Brand on four counts.
Russell Brand’s Wife Laura Gallacher Supported Him During Trial
Brand’s wife, Laura Gallacher, attended court and appeared as a character witness for her husband.
The couple married in 2017 and have three children together. Gallacher is an author and illustrator and the daughter of former professional golfer Bernard Gallacher.
During his testimony, Brand described the devastating impact the criminal proceedings had on his personal and professional life.
He said the allegations had consumed his life and claimed that friends and former colleagues had distanced themselves from him.
Although Gallacher testified in his defence, Brand acknowledged that no witnesses with direct evidence relevant to the allegations had come forward to support his account.

Russell Brand rose to prominence in Britain during the early 2000s through stand-up comedy, television presenting and radio broadcasting.
He later established a Hollywood career with performances in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, Arthur and Rock of Ages. He also provided the voice of Dr. Nefario in the Despicable Me franchise.
Brand was married to American pop singer Katy Perry from 2010 until their divorce was finalized in 2012.
In recent years, he moved away from mainstream entertainment and developed a substantial online audience through videos discussing wellness, religion, politics and conspiracy theories.
He also relocated to Florida and increasingly spoke publicly about his Christian faith.
The criminal proceedings have placed his career and public reputation under intense scrutiny.
