Why Did Harmeet Dhillon Resign? Why Trump’s DOJ Civil Rights Chief Stepped Down After Midterm Elections

Why Did Harmeet Dhillon Resign? Why Trump’s DOJ Civil Rights Chief Stepped Down After Midterm Elections

Harmeet Dhillon has resigned as head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, becoming one of the first senior Trump administration officials to depart following the midterm elections. The Indian-American attorney announced her departure on November 5, revealing that she had decided to leave several weeks earlier but delayed making the announcement at the White House’s request. Her resignation comes after a controversial tenure marked by major policy changes, internal disagreements and significant staff departures.

Dhillon, who served as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights for approximately 18 months, said her decision was voluntary. She thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity to serve and confirmed plans to return to private legal practice. Her departure has raised questions about the future direction of federal civil rights enforcement and leadership changes within the Justice Department.

Why Did Harmeet Dhillon Resign From the Justice Department?

Harmeet Dhillon said she had made the decision to resign approximately three weeks before publicly announcing her departure.

According to her account, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles requested that she wait until after the November midterm elections before revealing her decision.

Dhillon maintained that her resignation was voluntary and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the Trump administration.

Attorney General Todd Blanche publicly acknowledged her departure, thanking her for her leadership and commitment to civil liberties.

However, reports also described disagreements between Dhillon and senior Justice Department officials, including Blanche and Stan Woodward. Those accounts suggested that internal tensions had developed over management decisions and the division’s priorities.

The reported disagreements have attracted attention, although Dhillon has emphasized that she chose to leave her position.

Harmeet Dhillon’s Controversial Civil Rights Division Leadership

Dhillon assumed leadership of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division in 2025, bringing a different approach to federal civil rights enforcement.

During her tenure, the division increased scrutiny of diversity, equity and inclusion programs, particularly at universities and other institutions receiving federal funding.

Her office also prioritized investigations involving campus antisemitism and disputes over transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.

Supporters argued that these initiatives addressed discrimination and strengthened protections under federal law. Critics contended that the administration’s approach narrowed the division’s traditional mission and reduced attention to issues such as police misconduct, disability rights and other longstanding civil rights concerns.

The policy changes reflected broader disagreements over how federal civil rights laws should be interpreted and enforced.

Staff Departures and Internal Disagreements at DOJ

One of the most significant controversies surrounding Dhillon’s leadership involved staffing changes within the Civil Rights Division.

Reports indicated that a substantial number of career employees left the division, accepted buyouts or were reassigned during her tenure.

Some accounts suggested that more than 75% of the division’s staff had departed or changed positions, including over 100 career attorneys. The precise figure depends on whether resignations, retirements, buyouts and internal transfers are counted together.

Former employees and critics expressed concerns that the restructuring weakened institutional expertise and affected the division’s ability to pursue established civil rights cases.

Dhillon’s supporters viewed the changes as part of a broader effort to redirect federal enforcement toward the administration’s priorities.

The staffing controversy became one of the defining issues of her leadership and contributed to wider debate about the Justice Department’s independence and responsibilities.

What Will Harmeet Dhillon Do After Her Resignation?

Following her departure, Dhillon plans to return to private legal practice at the firm she founded.

Her longtime law firm, Dhillon Law Group, has handled constitutional litigation, employment disputes, election-related cases and other politically significant legal matters.

Former White House counsel David Warrington has also reportedly returned to the firm, strengthening its connections to attorneys with experience in the Trump administration.

Before joining the Justice Department, Dhillon was a prominent Republican attorney and served as a Republican National Committee member representing California.

Born in Chandigarh, India, she moved to the United States during childhood and later studied at Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia School of Law.

Her resignation closes a consequential period in federal service, but she remains an established figure in Republican legal circles.

The Justice Department now faces the task of determining the Civil Rights Division’s leadership and enforcement priorities following her exit. Dhillon’s departure also adds to broader questions about personnel changes within the Trump administration after the midterm elections.
